I want to preface this by saying that I understand that hospitals are necessary, doctors are necessary, and interventions are incredible (when necessary). These are hospital settings I have personally had bad birth experiences in AND also been a part of bad experiences – with clients. So, if you’ve had an amazing experience at one of these hospitals, YAY. They are far and few between. I’m happy for you. Don’t come @ me 🙂
These hospitals are a big fat NO for when when it comes to places I’d consider giving birth. If I was bleeding to death, I’d probably still avoid them… okay that’s dramatic, but you get the gist.
AND I honestly don’t even feel comfortable supporting clients in these environments because I know we are going to have to fight for everything we want/deserve.
So. STAY THE HECK AWAY from the following:
- Mostly anything Medical City.
- Texas Health Presbyterian Dallas
- Texas Health HEB
- Methodist Dallas
- Parkland or JPS (these are trauma hospitals – don’t have a baby here)
If you just feel safer in a hospital setting, I get that and I RESPECT that. But for the love of GOD – Choose wisely. And do it with education and support. Hire a doula. It doesn’t have to be me. DFW is full of amazing doulas. Learn how to advocate for yourself. Also know that if you call me and say you’re delivering at any of these, I’m going to 1. Ask why and 2. give you other options. If you decide you’d like to birth there anyways, don’t be surprised if I say I am not the doula for you. It’s not because I don’t want you to be fully loved, cherished, respected, and supported. It’s because THOSE THINGS WILL LIKELY NOT HAPPEN IN THESE HOSPITALS and I am tired of fighting for respect in these places.
When we give birth we need an environment that encompasses full body autonomy, informed consent, respect of our birth plans, and respect for our choices for our babies. One that doesn’t bully or shame us.
